OUR MISSION
To Engage and integrate clinical expertise into the planning and design of built healthcare environments
OUR VISION
Shaping the future of healthcare environments through clinical and professional leadership
WHAT WE BELIEve
LEADERSHIP | EDUCATION | ADVOCACY
The Nursing Institute for Healthcare Design is a non-profit professional association that stands for the engagement and integration of clinical expertise into the planning and design of healthcare environments, which we achieve through education, advocacy and leadership.
We promote health care design standards; foster inclusion of nurses and healthcare providers in all phases of the design process; and provide educational programs for our members; while we disseminate innovations and research evidence for all areas of health care design.
NIHD, Inc., a 501(C)6, promotes collaborative and interdisciplinary education for all disciplines within the health care design and construction community.
Our members continue to share with us their desire to network and build relationships, so we encourage you to become involved. If you would like to be a part of the ongoing work of NIHD, please consider joining a Committee or Task Force. It is a great way to get to know NIHD and make a 'connection' at the same time!
2026 PRESIDENT
Elizabeth Johnson, PhD, MS-CRM, RN
“As we welcome 2026, I am enthusiastic to usher in our theme of advocacy through vision and visibility. This year, NIHD will focus on making the impact of thoughtful healthcare design seen, heard, and valued in the spaces we create as well as the lives of patients, families, and care teams. We will listen to new voices on the Designing Care On-Air podcast across global design and care collaboration networks, encourage the next generation of design-trained nursing students at PDC Summit, and co-develop new education opportunities for our neighbors near and far. I look forward to advancing our collective mission to elevate design as a force for safety, equity, and healing across every care environment.”
