NIHD is a proud advocate for evidence-based design, with many of its members holding EDAC certification, demonstrating their commitment to this innovative approach. As nurses, we recognize that evidence-based models are integral not only to delivering exceptional patient care, but also to guiding every aspect of our professional practice. It is only natural, then, that we apply the same rigorous, data-driven principles to our design initiatives. By grounding our facility planning and design decisions in proven research and measurable outcomes, we ensure that our environments foster healing, support staff efficiency, and continually raise the standard of care for our patients.

In today’s rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, evidence-based design is more critical than ever. By harnessing robust data and analytical tools, we can make informed decisions that lead to safer, more efficient, and patient-centered environments.

Utilizing comprehensive data to track and analyze emergency room patient arrivals alongside their acuity levels plays a crucial role in effective space planning. By analysinz these trends, healthcare planning teams can simulate fluctuations in patient volume and complexity, allowing them to strategically plan resources and configure spaces to accommodate varying levels of care. This proactive approach ensures that each patient is matched with an appropriate bed and care setting upon arrival, reducing wait times and improving overall patient flow.

The following graphic illustrates how data can be dynamically adjusted to simulate and pressure-test various space planning scenarios. Manipulating variables such as patient arrival rates and acuity levels enables facility planners to visualize potential outcomes and address challenges in advance. This interactive method not only validates design assumptions but also identifies opportunities for optimization, ensuring layouts are efficient, resilient, and prepared to meet both current and future healthcare demands.

Additionally, data-driven space planning helps create adaptable operating room environments that respond to changing surgical case volumes. Whether increasing room availability during peak periods or reallocating spaces for specialized procedures, this strategy boosts operational efficiency and supports timely, high-quality surgical care. By continually analyzing surgical case data, facilities can optimize room utilization and reduce scheduling bottlenecks, maintaining excellence in surgical services and laying the groundwork for resilient, evidence-based healthcare environments.

This methodology, as shown in the image below, has played a key role in transforming perioperative areas within hospitals, and is especially valuable during periods of renovation, when operating rooms may need to be taken offline temporarily. By analyzing surgical case data, planners can assess the impact of reduced room availability on the overall surgical case mix and patient throughput. This enables facilities to proactively adjust schedules, redistribute cases, and minimize disruptions, ensuring continuity of care and optimal resource utilization even during construction phases.

Applying analytics to the design and renovation of surgical spaces ensures every aspect of the built environment promotes patient healing, enhances staff performance, and streamlines workflows.

As NIHD members, we are pioneers in embedding data and analytics into healthcare facility design. Leveraging our expertise and commitment to evidence-based practices, we have the opportunity to influence the built environment to positively impact patient outcomes and staff wellbeing. Our reach goes beyond planning, guiding every phase of the design cycle so environments are tailored to the changing needs of patients, clinicians, and communities.

Let’s work together to discover how data and analytics can elevate our design processes, enhance patient experiences, and set new benchmarks for healthcare excellence. By establishing evidence-based standards driven by data, NIHD members will continue to lead the way in creating healing environments, supporting staff efficiency, and advancing the quality of care—now and for years to come.
