NIHD Presents: Communication, Design and COVID: Evidence Based Applications

This NIHD hosted webinar will explore communication and evidence-based design research, theory, and practice applicable to COVID and other pandemics.

We examine how frameworks of hazard control and risk perception can address pandemic responses in the design of healthcare systems. We describe how the pandemic has affected typical health facility design, the use of communication technology in this new context and how communication and evidence-based design (EBD) alter in times of crisis. Communication is essential to develop proper messages that reach target audiences. Evidence-based design is a necessary approach for understanding how to mitigate infection transmission through design.

PANELIST: Terri Zborowsky PhD, RN, EDAC, CPXP, Design Researcher @ HGA

As an Evidence-based Design Researcher, Terri focuses on the intersection of user experience and human interaction within the built environment. Beginning her career as a registered nurse, she then obtained a PhD and Masters Degree in interior design. Terri uses this unique insight and combines her first-hand experience of patient and caregiver needs with architectural concepts and layouts to develop exceptional spaces. Terri is a frequent speaker at academic medical and healthcare conferences, and has a substantial repertoire of published works linking design and research within healthcare environments in the areas of neuroscience, chronic illnesses, and environments for the aging.

PANELIST: Debbie Gregory, DNP, RN, Senior Clinical Consultant @ SSR

Understanding how technology is used in clinical settings requires knowledge of workflow, design, and construction. Based on her 30 years of experience as a nurse, healthcare consultant, and interior designer, Debbie is an industry-leading advocate for clinical representation to build functional healthcare environments that improve safety, efficiency, and patient outcomes. She has become an effective liaison between the clinical, architectural, engineering, and construction communities. Debbie’s unique experiences allow her to effectively guide the design process toward outcomes that improve efficiency for end users. Debbie’s ability to be the eyes and voice of the patient and clinician with an understanding of the design and construction process has added value for healthcare clients.

In 2010, Debbie co-founded the Nursing Institute for Healthcare Design which has grown to more than 100 members. She is also a past president of the Nursing Institute for Healthcare Design. She was the recipient of the Nashville Business Journal’s Healthcare Hero – Innovator Award in 2011.
